Polishing Rocks

I never even knew that such a thing existed, as rock tumblers. I thought it may have something to do with landscaping or something. But I was wrong, it's for polishing rocks. Most people use them for their hobbies, like rock collecting (of course) and jewelry making. What do rock tumblers do exactly?
They bring out the natural beauty in dirty rough rock and semi-precious minerals. They create a smooth, lustrous finish of tumbled rock.
I have always been intrigued be the bright colored smooth rocks, that you can buy sometimes in souvenir shops. I always wondered how they got them so shiny. Now I know.
