Goodbye Whitney

Saturday evening I was sitting at Dairy Queen joking around with my friends Wendi & Stacey, when I got a couple of texts. One from Mom. One from D. Both said "Whitney Houston Died." My heart stopped. And I said "Oh no!" Wendi & Stacey immediately asked what was wrong & I told them. Behind me on the wall Fox News was playing with closed captioning & "Breaking News" was scrolling across the screen. The world was learning the news. I watched as a lady walked in & got a table as her husband ordered their food. I saw her face & she read the TV screen, she instantly got up & told her husband. They sat closer to the TV. I was heartbroken. I fought back the tears. If you know me, you know I love my celebrities. Whitney has always been a favorite of mine. I have followed her career for as long as I can remember. I don't see them as just celebs....I see them as human. Created by the same Lord that created me. They have a purpose too. So I do get upset when one I admire passes away.

This is the first Whitney album I ever owned. Mom didn't let me listen to too much "secular" music, but she approved of Whitney. I spent hours singing duets with Whitney in my bedroom. She was like a friend. I could turn on her tape & the world would fade away. I don't think I can name one of her songs I don't love, the list could go on & on, but "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" is one of my most favorites. I was remember getting just giddy when it aired on Mtv.

I'm seriously heartbroken. She is an icon. A legend. And not just vocalist, but a treasure. The talent God gave her was a blessing to us. What a gift that we were able to experience the power of her voice. No matter what may have gone on in her personal life, there is no doubt that she was one of the most incredible singers of all time. And a light was completely diminished with her death.

This was my status on facebook Sunday, after seeing some things that upset me being said....

I'm so saddened by Whitney Houston's death. She was an old friend, who's music kept me going when I was a troubled teen. I adore her. But in the light of her passing, it just once again showed just how incredibly judgemental Christians can be. This breaks my heart even more. We are the last that should be doing that, since we have been given so much grace. Whitney was an imperfect person just like you & me. We don't know the condition of a person's heart.....We all have our struggles, some are just more public than others.

So long beautiful Whitney......I hope to sing in Heaven with you someday.....

Karl had some old cammies he wanted me to throw away, but I kept them knowing something could be made from them. They have been through Bootcamp, to Iraq and Afghanistan, were faded and bloodstained. Soooo...I saw someone selling these wreaths on Lejeuneyardsales.com and thought, I can totally make that (like I do with most anything I see but never get around to making).

I now knew the reason I'd kept those cammies....

So...I got to work, cutting and tying...over and over. It took 2 pair of pants and one blouse to make it. It took me hours to make, which I spanned out over a few days...

So, here's how it went:

Here I tied on my bow and 'M' that I also painted. Had to tuck the ends of the ribbon into the wreath, otherwise it covered the M.

There are some days when you just are not happy. It seems everything just plain gets on your last nerve. And you can cry at the drop of a hat. Doesn't make you a bad person. Or un-Christian. It just makes you human. Today was one of those days for me. It's been awhile since I've had one. So this evening I put on a little bit of makeup & went to Target, just to get out of the house. I found my "Happy Place" in the nailpolish section & brought home these 2 beauties (Revlon "Sparkling" and OPI "I Lily Love You"). Amazing how a trip to Target for some new nailpolish can make a girl feel better.

Razzy has put on a bit of weight. He can't help it though....He loves food. :) But he now he can't jump into "his" recliner. We have to pick him up & put him in it. Hahaha! I've had this little stool stashed in the shed for awhile, so I grabbed it out last night before the rain hit & decided to give it a make-over.

This is a book review for "A Sound Among the Trees" by Susan Meissner.

If the cover of a book has a woman in an antebellum dress on it, the chances of me reading it are pretty great. I will say though that I was a bit skeptical of this book, when I began reading it. I don't like spooky things & this was about a ghost, Susannah Page, that haunts the halls of Holly Oak. Which was a home that stood through the wages of the Civil War, with a cannon ball still embedded in the wall, as proof of that long ago battle. The cast of characters soon drew me in....Susannah's 80 something, great-granddaughter, Adelaide. She is now the matriarch of Holly Oak. Then there is Marielle Bishop....The new bride that is brought to Holly Oak to live with her new husband Carson, who is the widower of Sara, Adelaide's granddaughter. Can you keep up? The layers of the people in the story are what make it so fascinating. I had no idea how this book would turn out, which I loved. And it was much different than I had expected....Super glad about that, since I didn't want any nightmares. My favorite part of the whole book were Susannah's letters. I could have read an entire book of just those! I fell in love with Susannah. This is a book about love, the struggle of the hardships life throws our way & the redemptive power of forgiveness.I have never read a book written by Susan Meissner, but this surely will not be the last. I enjoyed her style of writing immensely.

Pajama Dance Night

Last night I met up with Stacey over at Wendi's house. We have all become a bit obsessed with "Just Dance 3". We thought we might as well be comfy so we wore our PJ's & had some Little Caesars pizza. I also took my vast array of nailpolish. It was just a fun casual night with no real plans. We talked, laughed, ate, painted nails, went to Ulta & Barnes & Noble in our PJ's, rode with the top down on the car, danced, got hot & sat out in the gazebo while it rained, talked & laughed some more. It was a great night! And I didn't get home until 3:30am. That's the new joke...You can't leave Wendi's until 3am. Haha!

We did have a little adventure...As we were walking from the car into Ulta, I was walking a little ways in front of Stacey & Wendi, when I saw 2 girls come bursting out of the door of the store. They had 2 large purses & were laughing. The alarm was going off. They started running in my direction & I yelled "Did y'all just shoplift?" The one girl said as she was running by "What makes you think we shoplifted!?!" To which I yelled back "Because y'all are running like crazy people, who have!" As they were jumping in the car, the employees of Ulta came to the door & began yelling for us to get their tag number. It all happened so fast, we couldn't see the tag. But they were in a white newer Toyota. The girls stole tons of perfume. I told the police what I saw. The employees said they are not allowed to walk out of the store to get the tag or they would be fired. It's crazy! Stacey & Wendi were cracking up & shocked at me for confronting those girls. I was mad I didn't have a chance to stop them. :/ Stacey said I need to be a private investigator, since I always seem to see things. Hahaha! Man.....I would LOVE that job. If I could go back in time, I would totally make that my career.

And I didn't take any pictures from the entire night! What is wrong with me?

Do you ever watch the shows that follow people who have addictions? Whether it be to drugs, alcohol, eating disorders or even shopping? I was addicted to the shows for awhile. I still find myself watching them from time to time. But it's just so heart wrenching at times.Yet, you can't turn away. I love that these people are getting help though. I've often seen them send people to places in California, like the san diego drug alcohol rehab treatment center. If you have to go into some kind of treatment, why not in a beautiful place like California?

I have only missed it a few times. I actually went to the 2000 Academy Awards. D & I went & stood with other fans. But we got there way too late & couldn't see anything, so we left. On Christmas day, after we have opened our gifts we walk over to Mom's to spend the day. We wear our new pj's, watch movies, play games, eat & just chill out the entire day.

I did not want the day to end at all. I got sad when Mom & D got tired & we came home, because I knew once we were home the day was officially over. I always get a bit melancholy on Christmas night. I know I shouldn't fear the future, but I do. I don't like the unknown & Christmas is a marker that the year is really coming to an end. I know most people look at the new year with hope, but I like to stay right where I am. Hahaha! The future does hold great promise, but it can also bring unwanted things too. Anyhoo.....On a lighter note! This was truly a wonderful Christmas! How blessed I am. God is good & I am thankful.

Christmas Eve At Mom's

We tried to get back to Mom's in time to see Santa on the firetruck & we thought we missed him. We were almost home, when we saw the flashing lights down a street, so we turned to see him. But he was in the bushes taking a potty break. Hahaha!

Mom made this nightgown for Mercy....She made a matching one for the doll Santa was bringing too (but Mercy didn't know about that)

D & I got Mercy the first 5 Mandie books. These are the books that sparked such a love of reading in me.

This of course was a "gag" gift for Keith. Danny made him think this was all he was getting. Haha!

Assisted Living

We don't have to think about Assisted living san diego, but some day we may have to think about it in the los angeles area. Hopefuuly it won't come to that, but D's parents still live in LA & aren't not getting any younger. They have refused to move out here to Alabama, so we can take care of them someday. So the chances of them having to more to an assisted living place are much greater.

Since I don't have a basement though, I don't have to think about things like basement tile. I have a friend that has had tons of issues with their basement. I wonder if they have basement tiles as their flooring.

CPU Cart

It's been awhile since I have had to sit with anyone in the hospital....Thank goodness. But when I was there with Mom after her knee replacement surgery, I could never sleep when I stayed over night. Not with the sound of the cpu cart going up & down the halls & nurses coming in & out of the room. I don't know how people actually recover in the hospital, since they aren't left alone to rest.

Furniture

I loved browsing through the furniture stores los angeles, while I lived there. There was one store that had only very modern stuff. Then there was one that all the furniture was extremely bright colors. But my favorite place was a shabby chis place. I could have spent hours in that shop, because everywhere you looked you saw something new & exciting. Sometimes I really miss LA sometimes...

Clothes

Maternity clothes sure have changed. They are a far cry from the big moo-moo dresses with the big bow. Now they are trendy & look like everyday clothing any woman would wear. Being a mommy-to-be is a very "in" thing, so having the right outfits in your wardrobe is very important. Ya gotta be chic, while creating life, right?

Christmas Adam 2011

I basically had to do the majority of my Christmas shopping the day before Christmas Eve...AKA...Christmas Adam. Mom & I met Diane at Kohl's at 9am to begin a whirlwind day of shopping. We had a blast! Diane dropped up off our our car close to 8pm, but we weren't done yet! Mom & I shopped till 11:30pm! I then came home & wrapped presents until 4am.

I was trying to wrap this little Snoopy for Leland, when Razzy saw it from across the room. He came running over & was trying to take it away from me. He eventually stole it. Hahaha! And he loves his Snoopy! If you ask him to "go get your Snoopy", he does! :)

Rocco was not pleased that Razzy got to steal a present & he didn't. Here he is staring Razzy down & planning his chance to steal the Snoopy.

Razzy then "helped" me wrap every present. This went on for over 2 hours until I made him to get in his bed. Such a good helper boy.

Christmas In The Barn

We had our annual Christmas get together with the family up in the barn.

We did a totally different menu. There was meatloaf (Mom's & the best in the world), pork (made by my Uncle Bob), butter beans, cole slaw, cornbread, Crack Potatoes, Paula Deen's greenbean casserole, mac & cheese & deviled eggs. There was probably other stuff, but I can't remember. It was ALL so good! And so fun to make different things, except for Jamie, who got stuck with deviled eggs. Hahahaha!

I made the Crack Potatoes. I got the recipe from pinterest. They were a huge hit! You know they are good, when Paw is asking about what's in them. And Codie kept eating them throughout the time we were there.

Let me explain the above photo.....

We were playing "Dirty Santa" with $10 gift cards, but Diane opened one with $10 cash, she took it & put it in her shirt. Jimbo (Renee's husband) was the next number & ran over & said I want that $10! Diane said "you gotta get it", not thinking he would & he did!!!!!! We were on the floor dying laughing!!!!! I about peed my pants!!!!! (at least I think that's how it happened. It was so quick!) On the way home, D & I were talking about how funny it was & he said "I couldn't look. I was embarrassed." Hahahahaha!

Laughing hysterically! Poor Desiree (Chad's girlfriend)....It was her first time with our family, I hope she isn't tarnished! Haha!

I want to squeeze her. :) As you can tell Alyssa seems to be my favorite subject at family gatherings. But she smiles & poses when I tell her. Plus she's so darn cute!

This had to be one of the BEST family Christmas gatherings. We had such a happy, fun, laughter filled time. My ♥ is full!

White Christmas

Last year, Leland invited us to go see "White Christmas" at The Alabama Theatre, after he discovered I share his love of the most amazing Christmas movie ever! :) Leland has gone to see "White Christmas" there for the last 20 years. But for us it is our new tradition. And one I truly look forward to all year. There is nothing like seeing this classic film in that gorgeous theatre. And even more special when you are watching it with someone who gets just as giddy as you throughout the film.

On one of my trips to the bathroom in the basement, a young girl, maybe 11-12 stopped me & said she loved my pink sparkly headband. I told her thank you, that I love sparkly things. She said she does too & that she has a pair of sparkly hightops she wears to school, but is made fun of, because people tell her she wears them too much. I told her she just needs to tell them that you can never wear sparkles too much. She grinned so big. As I made my way back up the 3 flights of stairs I just chuckled to myself as I thought "A 35 year old woman was just complimented by a little girl for her sparkly pink hairbow!" Hahahaha!

Energy

One of my least favorite things in the world is to find the power bill in my mailbox. My second least favorite thing is to open it & see the amount. And the third least favorite thing is to have to pay it! I'm all for some low cost energy. We haven't had a very cold Winter this year, but on the coldest days I have put off turning the heat on. Thankfully I enjoy it being cold.

I love youtube. What would life be without being able to run over to that site & watch clips of something you may have missed on a show. Or to get sucked into watching hours cute videos of animals. Happens to me all the time. I upload videos quite often. Gone are the days of VHS tapes of family events or those special moments. You can now save those times, by downloading videos from youtube.

Thyroid

Having a thyroid imbalance can affect so many areas of your health. I have a hypothyroid & one of the symptoms is gaining weight & not being able to lose it. Plus fatigue. Both are so much fun (said very sarcastically). People who have a hyperthyroid, tend to be skinnier & have more energy. I know there is no good thing about having a thyroid imbalance, but to be skinnier would be nice.

Seaweed

Who knew that you could use seaweed for more things than just sushi?....Which I love, by the way. There are all kinds of seaweed products available & tons of benefits for your health, as well as your skin like....Restoring moisture, nourishing, cleanses & soothes, among many other things. I guess mermaids have known this secret for ages. Looks like it's not a secret anymore. ;)

Leland & I have been talking about going to Garden Ridge to check out their Christmas decor stuff for ages. He happened to be on vacation on my birthday, so we planned to go then. D was going to go too, but had to work for part of the day. So it was Leedles & I on our adventure.

The day began with him picking me up at Mom's. She had made a present for him.

He brought her "Banana bread".

For those privy to Mom's "lipstick story" you will understand why Mom made Leland a lipstick. Hahaha!

I gave him his late bday gift. This is tie-dye wrapping paper from about 13-14 years. I used it for a bulletin board back when I was a daycare teacher.

From Mom's we went to a store to see if they had cookies he used to buy for his Daddy (they didn't), then we went to a thrift store. I wanted to check on some ties. That place is nicer & cheaper than thrift store, close to my house. From there we went to Garden Ridge, where most of there Christmas stuff was picked over. :( And it was like that everywhere!

Me with my "NeNe Leakes" earrings...aka Christmas ornaments. There were some chicks about my age or younger that saw me doing this & gave me the "You are an idiot" look. But really? What is odd about adult posing for goofy pictures inside a store? Haha!

We then went to an antique place called "Urban Suburban", to look at his friends Joan Crawford collection that he is selling. I LOVE those kinda places. I did a little Christmas shopping there.

We then headed to the mall, but we came through downtown. I have never entered downtown from the North side, so I was turned around & so was Leland. We finally made our way to the interstate & to the mall. We were meeting D, but D wasn't there yet, so we went to the Christmas Tree Shop. Booooo hiss!!!! They didn't have hardly ANY Christmas anything! How do you name a store that & not have Christmas stuff? He had never been to World Market, so we went in there. Another one of the stores I enjoy.

Deedles & Leedles

We went to the Christmas ornament store & to the calendar store. Was disappointed they didn't have any Lucy ornaments...But they had "Jersey Shore" ones? Yuck!

We don't have a Costco card anymore, so Leland took us over & we got D some of his favorite chocolate muffins. And we walked around, getting the samples to give to D to eat. :)

Leland dropped us off at our car, then we went to Target (D bought me the newest Adele cd) & Kohl's. I mainly just went to see their Christmas stuff. I have to see it all every year if I can. But it of course was all picked over. Then to Hobby Lobby for a few more craft supplies. I was shocked when we went in there! They have condensed the Christmas stuff & are bringing out the next season. I guess I'm just in denial Christmas is NEXT WEEK!

After we left Hobby Lobby, we got us each a cupcake at Gigi's. I got the "Scarlett's Red Velvet" & D got the "Bourbon Ball". Then went to Walmart. As we were looking for a place to park, we saw Leland unloading his buggy, so we stopped & talked somemore. Instead of going to the movies, I decided I would rather use that $ on something I wanted so I got one of those hair wands. I have been wanting one for a long time. For supper we went to a new Hibachi/sushi/chinese buffet.

When we got home we went & visited Mom & Danny. Mom gave me a sweatshirt robe like one she has. I have been wanting one too! It looks just like a hoodie sweatshirt, but it goes to your ankles. I was super excited!
